Attaching the topper to the bed

Most foam bedding comes vacuum-packed and rolled these days, and the Levitex topper is no different.

I found it was easy to unpack from the box and then unravel from the plastic. Once on the bed, Levitex says it takes the topper a few hours to regain its shape.

In my experience, it takes a wee bit longer than this. I’d give it at least four hours, or – if you can – unpackage it in the morning and it’ll be good to go by the evening.

I am a bit sensitive to off-gassing on foam mattresses and toppers. I don’t enjoy the chemical scent. As you might expect, there was some off-gassing scent from the all-foam Levitex mattress topper. This wasn’t too bad, but I would suggest leaving a window open for a little while to ventilate.

Many mattress toppers affix to a bed using elasticated straps around the corners. This helps keep the mattress topper in place. However, with the Levitex Sleep Posture mattress topper, this isn’t the case.

Instead, it has a non-slip base, which seemed to work OK for me during testing. I didn't notice it moving around whilst we slept on it.

Personally, I’d prefer elasticated straps for total peace of mind, but once encased in a fitted sheet, it didn’t really seem to matter that there weren’t any straps.

Comfort

The Levitex Sleep Posture mattress topper was developed in hospitals, where sleep posture and extended bouts of being in bed can have a huge impact on overall well-being.

The topper was developed to be soft and cushioning without creating excessive sink, for the perfect level of support. According to Levitex, at 25 per cent compression it sinks, but once you reach 65 per cent compression, the topper bounces back. This should mean you’re comfortable but can still move around. Which, according to Levitex, is the key to good-quality, restorative sleep.

Lots of people love the cushioning of memory foam, but I usually find I don't like the soft and sinking feeling of a memory foam topper, like the Panda Topper or Dreams TheraPur ActiGel Cool Mattress Topper I recently tested. So I was keen to see if I found this foam topper more comfortable.

During testing, I found the Levitex Sleep Posture mattress topper to be incredibly comfortable.

My husband is a back sleeper, and in this sleeping position, you can sometimes find your bum sinks too much after a while on a softer sleep surface, which can cause lower back pain. However, on the Levitex, I tried sleeping on my back and found I felt a lot more horizontal than I usually do in this position. My spine felt in a neutral alignment, and it felt like somewhat of a revelation.

But what of my achy hip when I lie on my side? Again, I was pleased to note that this resolved itself on the Levitex. I felt gently supported, and while the topper did sink under pressure, it didn’t feel like the bed was going to swallow me up. I was impressed with the responsiveness of the Levitex Sleep Posture mattress. It’s sort of like sleeping on a bouncy cloud.

Moving from position to position is really important to nighttime comfort levels. The more effort you make to move in your sleep, the more likely you are to have disturbed sleep.

I found the Levitex didn’t make changing position in bed quite as easy as I’m used to, and I did have to put in some effort to flip from back to side and vice versa. However, I am used to a much firmer sleep surface, so this is probably more of a me problem.

Speaking of movement, I noticed great movement isolation on this topper. It is only 5cm deep, but adding it to the bed meant I couldn’t feel my husband moving around next to me, nor when he got out of bed while I was asleep. This could be a game-changer for those who struggle to sleep next to anyone else.

Temperature regulation

I am sensitive to overheating on foam, so I was paying sharp attention to whether this foam mattress topper overheated me. I am used to all natural fibres on my Hypnos Wool Origins mattress, so would the Levitex match up?

I found it not quite as temperate as my wool mattress, but it didn’t excessively overheat me. I tested this mattress topper during the hottest June on record, with some truly sweltering nights – I’m not sure the Levitex can be held solely to blame for a few very warm night’s sleep I suffered through.

Levitex doesn’t make any bold claims about cooling, unlike lots of specific cooling mattress toppers, but other nights, when the mercury dropped slightly, I felt the mattress topper kept me at a comfortable temperature. Certainly I didn’t wake up in a hot, sweaty mess.

Care instructions

Levitex says the topper contains an 'inherent antimicrobial treatment' which prevents the build-up of mould, bacteria, and mildew. They call this AM:PM. As is so often the case with sleep brands, there’s little out there about what this actually means, but Levitex offers a five-year guarantee on the topper, which does help peace of mind.

There is also a zip-off cover, which you can machine wash in a standard washing machine. This is great if you do have allergies or just want to do a full clean of your mattress topper. Although it’s not a job I’d fancy doing weekly, as the topper is going to be slightly tricky to get back in the cover again.

As with any sleep surface, a mattress protector is a good idea to keep everything absolutely shipshape and hygienic.

Sleep trial

Levitex offers a 44-day sleep trial, and there are free returns for mainland UK customers (non-UK customers must foot this bill themselves).

However, you must have slept on the mattress for 30 nights before returning it. This is so your body can get used to the surface and you’re definitely sure it’s not right for you.

This sleep trial is a useful benefit that not all brands offer, and as this topper isn't cheap, it's well worth making sure it's going to improve your sleep before you commit to keeping it.

Verdict

Overall, I was really impressed by the Levitex Sleep Posture mattress topper. It delivered on its promise of being incredibly comfortable and supportive, and eased aches on pressure points that I hadn’t really acknowledged were there before testing.

I found this topper to offer a great balance of gentle comfort that’s underpinned by solid support. I found it didn’t have that real sink-in feeling like some memory foam has, where it moulds around your body, which I, for one, appreciated.

At 5cm thick, it’s not the beefiest of toppers – but for that 5cm it does work very hard to offer a supportive night’s sleep.

This is a pricey mattress topper though – it’s a considered purchase. However, the 44 night sleep trial makes making that investment a little less risky.

I’m Zoë, a writer who helps the Ideal Home team put all manner of products through their paces to find the top recommendations for our readers. For this review, I put the Levitex Sleep Posture mattress topper through Ideal Home's testing process. Here are my sleep stats:

Usual sleep position: side
Tension preference: medium-firm
Sleep problems: hip pain

In order to test out this mattress topper, I slept on it for two weeks in my own home on top of the fairly firm pocket-spring Hypnos Wool Origins 6 mattress. I assessed how easy it was to attach to the bed, how comfortable it was when sleeping on my back and side, and whether it offered good temperature regulation. I also took into account how easy it was to care for and any sleep trials on offer.
