Why bean-to-cup beats the rest

So why is bean to cup the crème de la crème of the coffee machine world? It’s simple really – a bean-to-cup machine will grind your coffee beans fresh to order, then force water through the grounds at high (often 15 bar) pressure, before they’ve had chance to lose any of their flavoursome oils or aromatics. This makes for delicious drinks with a thick crema on top, which is everything, especially if you’re into shorter, unadulterated espressos and caffè macchiatos.

Compare that to a pod coffee machine, where you'll have a pile of used pods to deal with, or a percolator that uses pre-ground coffee, and you'll see that bean-to-cup comes out on top when it comes to fresh flavour, convenience and sustainability, not to mention choice of drinks.

Top-of-the-range machines can serve up a dozen or more espresso-based drinks, from americanos and ristrettos to milky cappuccinos and lattes. You can usually  select the strength of your coffee and – if you’re a true coffee aficionado – some models give you the option of creating your own profiles.

Now, you can fine tune every element of your drink – the level of froth, the size, the temperature of the milk or water. It’s a level of service your high-street barista will struggle to beat, even if they do draw a smiley face on your cup…
