I tested a new cordless vacuum from an under-the-radar brand in my chaotic family home – it's smart, sleek, and its edge cleaning is a game-changer

As a mum of three, my vacuum gets a serious workout on a daily basis, so I'm always keen to try something that promises to save time and make the job easier. That's exactly why I was keen to put the Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum through its paces.

While not as well-known as Shark and Dyson, I've heard positive things about this brand (pronounced like 'dreamy') and its products, so I was curious to see whether it would live up to the hype. After testing multiple times of day in my family home, I'd say it's definitely earned its place among the best cordless vacuum cleaners.

In a nutshell

From the first use, I was genuinely impressed by how well the Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum performed, especially given that it's from a brand that might not be on everyone's radar yet. It handled the day-to-day mess of my busy family home with ease, and what really stood out was how lightweight and manoeuvrable it felt. The extendable, forward-bending wand is a feature I used more often than I expected, making it far easier to clean under furniture and around awkward spaces.

One of the biggest highlights for me was the edge cleaning. The GapFree technology really does make a difference, pulling up dust and debris right up against skirting boards and into corners - areas I notoriously struggle to clean. Combined with the Auto mode, which responds exceptionally well to changing levels of dirt, it made cleaning feel more intuitive, and I didn't need to think about switching settings mid-task.

It also fits naturally into everyday life. It's comfortable to use for long periods, and the battery time held up well, particularly if I stuck to Auto mode. The attachments make it versatile enough to handle everything from hard floors and stairs to skirting boards and my breakfast stools after the kids have eaten at them (IYKYK). In addition to the multi-surface floorhead, there's a soft roller brush designed for hard floors, but I can understand how switching between the two floorheads could be a hassle for some people.

If I had to pick a downside, it would be the dustbin size. At 0.5L, it fills up fairly quickly in a busy household like mine, so you need to get into the habit of emptying it regularly. That said, it's quick and simple to do, so it didn't feel like a major inconvenience. It's completely won me over, and I can't see myself parting with it.

I've tested a range of floor care appliances for Ideal Home, and I tested the Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum in my three-bedroom family home for the past two weeks. I have used it every day (at least twice daily), putting it through our rigorous testing process.

Unboxing, setting up and first impressions

The Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum came packaged in a large, rectangular box, protected by an additional, outer layer of cardboard. It was fairly heavy, but it has a built-in carry handle, which made it manageable to carry.

After sliding out the branded box, I turned it sideways to open - rather than lengthways, which actually made it easier to see what was inside and remove the contents. Inside, the parts and accessories were wrapped individually in plastic and placed on top of a moulded cardboard tray. Beneath this, the main vacuum body, extendable tube and charging dock sat on top of another layer of moulded cardboard.

I laid out all of the parts and accessories, and I was immediately struck by just how many tools are included. It includes two floor heads (a multi-surface brush and a soft roller for hard floors), a flexible extension tube, a motorised mini-brush, a combination tool, and a charging and storage base.

Then, setting up the Dreame V20 was straightforward. The user manual features several diagrams, which on first glance can feel a little overwhelming, but in practice, there's very little to it. All I needed to do was insert the extension rod into the main unit and attach the floorhead (I opted for the multi-surface brush), which only took a couple of minutes in total.

I always like to take a proper look at any new appliance before using it. The Dreame V20 isn't self-standing, but it slots neatly onto its charging dock, so it's not an issue. And as the vacuum needs to be fully charged before first use, I placed it on the dock, connecting the charger between the mount and the power supply.

In terms of design, the Dreame V20 felt really sleek and premium. The handheld unit weighs just 1.58kg, so it's impressively lightweight, which makes it feel easy to handle and manoeuvre from the outset. The control panel sits on top of the main unit, and there's an extendable rod for added reach, which is a practical touch. My only real reservation at this stage was the size of the dustbin, which felt on the smaller side. So, I was keen to see how that would hold up in practice, and how often it would need emptying.

Using the Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum

There are two buttons at the bottom of the control panel: one for power and the other to switch between the three vacuum modes (Auto, Eco, and Max). Once powered on, the control panel is intuitive to navigate, with a clear display which shows the battery percentage and cleaning mode.

By default, the vacuum starts in Auto mode - indicated by an 'A' symbol - where suction power adjusts automatically depending on the level of dust detected. This works alongside the fan-shaped icon, which changes colour in real time: green for low, orange for medium and red for high dust levels. You can switch manually between the modes, but it's worth noting that this does affect the battery life, draining much quicker when in Max mode.

Before using the Dreame V20 Pro for regular cleaning, I put it through its paces with a number of controlled tests, which is part of how we test vacuums at Ideal Home. The 'debris test' involves throwing various sizes of debris on the floor and seeing how quickly and effectively the vacuum picks it up.

I switched to the soft roller brush, designed for hard floors, and scattered some flour, crushed Cheerios and porridge oats across my kitchen floor. Keeping the vacuum in Auto mode, I passed it over the debris, and I was immediately impressed. It had no trouble picking up everything in its path in a single pass, without needing to go back over the same area.

I then repeated the same test, using the multi-surface brush on carpet. I was expecting it to take a couple of passes, but again, I was left really impressed after the vacuum removed all traces of debris after only one pass. Overall, the Dreame V20 Pro made light work of the debris test.

I then continued to use the Dreame V20 Pro in my busy family home, multiple times a day. It replaced my regular Shark vacuum (which is quite a few years old), and I relied on it for everything from general floor cleaning to more targeted tasks using the different attachments.

I was really impressed with how lightweight and easy to use it is for everyday cleaning. I found it really easy to carry between rooms and switch between attachments. And one of the standout features is the flexible, forward-bending wand with an adaptable hose, which made it easy to reach under furniture and into awkward spaces without needing me even needing to crouch down.

In terms of performance, it handled the demands of my busy household with ease. I found the Auto mode particularly effective in day-to-day use, responding well to changes in debris level and automatically adjusting the power where needed without any input.

The battery life varies depending on the mode you use. While it can last up to 80 minutes in Eco mode, it depletes quickly in Max mode, so I tended to stick to Auto, which delivered around 30-35 minutes of runtime. This was more than enough for everyday cleaning, and I quickly got into the habit of recharging between each use, with the storage dock doubling as the charging station.

The only real drawback was the dust bin size, which at 0.5L is on the smaller side. While I did need to empty it regularly, it was straightforward to do so it didn't feel like a hassle in practice. Overall, it feels like a fair trade-off for lightweight design and strong performance.

Using the attachments

In addition to the two floorheads, the Dreame V20 Pro includes a motorised mini-brush and a combination tool. I'll admit I have a tendency to misplace appliance tools without a designated home, so I particularly appreciated the storage compartments built into the charging station.

I used the motorised mini-brush on my stairs, an area I always struggle to keep on top of, and I was really impressed with its edge cleaning power. It reached right into the corners and along the edge of each step, lifting out dust and hair with ease. It was weirdly satisfying to see every bit of debris lift.

Cleaning the stairs wasn't completely effortless, and I did have to apply some manual effort using the vacuum as a handheld appliance, but it still felt far more effective than using a standard attachment. It was also noticeably more lightweight without the main floorhead and wand attached.

The combination tool is a 2-in-1 attachment with a crevice nozzle and soft brush, designed for smaller and more focused cleaning tasks, such as corners, edges and upholstery.

The first place I put it to the test was on my breakfast stool chairs, which are a notoriously difficult area to keep clean. The amount of crumbs, and frankly, unknown debris that had built up in the crevices was embarrassing to say the least.

Turns out the Dreame V20 Pro proved to be exactly what I needed here; it lifted all the trapped crumbs and dust with ease. The bristle brush also adds an extra level of effectiveness, helping it feel like a more thorough, deep clean rather than just a surface tidy.

Cleaning and maintenance

Cleaning a vacuum cleaner is one of those jobs that's easy to neglect, but a non-negotiable if you want to keep performance consistent over time. Thankfully, maintenance for the Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum is straightforward.

The dustbin easily detaches from the main unit and empties with a simple, one-click release. Although the bin capacity is on the smaller side, it's quick to empty, and I got into the habit of emptying it daily and wiping it down with a cloth.

The filters and components are also easy to access and clean, and each attachment can be removed individually. The rollers on the multi-surface brush and soft roller brush do require occasional maintenance - they need to be rinsed and left to dry for 24 hours when necessary. While this is slightly more involved than a quick wipe-down, the upside is that it doesn't need to be done after every use.

The charging station doubles as a storage dock, helping keep everything neatly organised while accessories dry and ensuring all components are stored in one place. Overall, maintenance is low-effort and fits easily into everyday use. As far as charging docks go, it's quite neat and relatively compact, so it doesn't take up much floor space either.

How does it compare to similar models?

thatThe Dream V20 Pro sits in a competitive part of the cordless vacuum market, and there are a few models it’s worth comparing to.

The one it reminds me of most during testing is the Shark Stratos Cordless - it’s currently Ideal Home’s top-rated cordless vacuum, and it’s the one I use daily at home. Both offer smart features like automatic suction and a clear display, but where the Shark leans into more robust, all-round cleaning - and doesn't require switching floorheads between surfaces - the Dreame feels lighter, sleeker and more design-led. The flexible wand also makes it easier to manoeuvre, although the dust bag is noticeably smaller.

The Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean is another highly rated cordless vacuum. Both models feature flexible wands for added reach, but the obvious difference is the capacity - the Shark's larger dust system makes it better suited for larger homes and households who vacuum frequently, while the Dreame feels lighter and more agile.

In terms of innovation, the Dyson V8 Cyclone is a a closer comparison. It offers a more advanced, data-led cleaning experience, while the Dreame delivers a similar, smart feel in a simpler, more accessible way.

Finally, we recently tested the Halo Capsule XR Cordless, which takes a slightly different approach focusing on capacity and hygiene with its bagged design. This makes emptying and cleaning more convenient, while the Dreame leans more into smart features, and a sleeker design.

Verdict: Should you buy the Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum?

The Dreame V20 Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum delivers where it counts. If you're looking for a cordless vacuum that handles everyday mess with ease, feels genuinely effortless to use, and goes the extra mile on edge cleaning, I can't recommend it enough.

For larger homes and those who vacuum regularly, the smaller dustbin may feel like a drawback, and there are certainly other alternatives which may be better suited, but they come with a trade-off in weight and manoeuvrability.

As a mid-range option, it punches well above its weight. And if you've been on the fence about trying a less familiar brand, the Dreame V20 makes a very convincing case for itself. It's certainly earned a permanent place in my cleaning routine.
