Roundup of on-trend check, tartan and plaid wallpapers
Check, gingham, tartan, plaid – whatever you name it, there’s a square-shaped trend going on right now. Not only on the catwalk, but in the home. Banish all thoughts of Doris Day, kitsch Americana and French country curtains, it’s time to go mad for plaid.
1. It’s big for spring/summer 2015!
Say hello to the Charlotta, just out from Sandberg. Spring/summer 2015 gingham may be subtle
in colour, but it’s large in scale. With all the comforting undertones of a tartan rug, the oversized check wallpaper makes a warm backdrop to a contemporary living space, complete with mid-century sofa, Crittall-style windows and stone floor. So, literally, you live this trend large.
2. It makes a statement
Graham & Brown‘s Audrey works the whole thing in a subtle but striking muted silver metallic. The Marcel Wanders design harks back to tradition, but the smoky grey tones add a touch of modern sophistication. The oversized floor lamp is right on-trend, too. See our Permatrend story.
3. It has retro edge
Sandberg‘s Vincent wallpaper, with brown and blue lines on a white background, is pure Hoxton chic – a spin on the plaid shirt Dad used to wear. In the home, it’s cool, clean and modern Scandi – a natural fit with warm wood pieces, particularly those with strong lines and shapes, such as stools, chests of drawers and picture frames.
4. It doesn’t have to be trad
This Mulberry Home wallpaper updates the heritage print with touches of gold (Oriental bowls, lamps, table legs and round mirror). The lines of the leather modular sofa and the Julian Chichester black stained console table blend classic and contemporary design perfectly. A colourful wool rug and touchy-feely ottoman add warmth and a light touch.
5. It’s easy on the eye
The Ester check wallpaper makes for an inviting, fuss-free office space. Complete the look with a pale wood desk (the check actually highlights the grain in the ash) and industrial-style metal lamp. The textile feel of this Sandberg wall hanging pays homage to the brand’s west Sweden location, which has a heritage of textile production. Doesn’t this environment make working from home that bit easier?
