5 great style steals from this eccentric-meets-contemporary home

Inspiring ideas for adding vintage character and luxe materials to your living space…

1 Be bold with colour
The dining room demonstrates how a clever mash up of colour and styles adds drama and personality. The tall Thirties doors came from an old library and allow in light from the hallway. The oversize antler chandelier was so big, the owners had to take the window out to get it in – ‘but it was worth it,’ they say. Old pine floorboards are reinvented with a painted black and white chequerboard design.

2 Play on scale
‘There’s something wonderfully indulgent about putting grand objects in a small space,’ say the owners. The freestanding kitchen suits the couple’s style and the fabulous cabinets make the perfect setting for their collection of Poole Pottery. They have used marble for worktops and glossy ceramic tiles to add a layer of luxe.

3 Twist up traditional
Eclectic is the key word throughout the house, and nowhere more so than in the office/spare bedroom. ‘We love traditional motifs with a twist,’ say the owners, ‘So we had the Chesterfield sofabed made in icy white. It’s a bit like a gentleman’s club turned on its head.’ The artwork, which is letraline under gold leaf, was created by one of the owners.

4 Vary the mood
‘Our aim was to create a range of moods from room to room,’ say the owners, ‘from cosy to playful.’ They designed their bedroom to be quite ethereal, in shades of soft blues and off-white. ‘We wanted it to be a very restful space – but couldn’t do without colour completely so there are bright flashes like the green and turquoise rug and the gilded artwork above the bed.’ The original Georgian walls would have had panelling made with plaster mouldings, so the owners emulated this effect using painted wood beading.

5 Mix up eras
‘We didn’t want any of the rooms to feel like they were stuck in one era,’ say the owners. ‘So in the bathroom you have a geometric tile pattern that’s a contemporary take on art deco, partly inspired by the bathroom of one of our grandmother’s, mixed with an aged brass shower and a 1940s chandelier.’ For contrast and drama they put a mirror into a gilded picture frame and sprayed it black.
