Step aside Facebook Marketplace, Vinted and eBay: IKEA is launching their own secondhand marketplace, and it will be available to customers in the UK later this year.

Admittedly, I have a fair amount of IKEA furniture in my home, and I love an IKEA DIY hack as much as the next person - so while I am a little biased, I’m pleased to be bringing you this news.

The Swedish furniture brand has always been known for its affordability, but for those of us looking to snag an even cheaper deal or shop more sustainably, Here’s everything we know so far.

This week, it was announced that IKEA’s second-hand marketplace would be arriving in the UK in the coming months, following successful pilots in Sweden and Norway. The IKEA second-hand marketplace is a dedicated space where consumers can buy pre-loved IKEA products. Similar to other market platforms, customers can interact directly with each other to buy and sell items locally.

IKEA hasn't released many details about the launch, just that it is happening. But Spain’s platform offers sellers the chance to earn an extra 15% when they sell via IKEA’s marketplace. The Spanish marketplace also states that every purchase is verified by IKEA and covered by free buyer protection.

What we do know, however, is that customers will need to be signed up as an IKEA Family member to use the marketplace.

‘At IKEA, we are always looking for new ways to make life at home even better and help our customers discover products they love. With the launch of IKEA second-hand marketplace in the UK, we’re taking a meaningful step toward creating a destination that simplifies access to pre-owned IKEA furniture,’ a spokesperson for IKEA said.

‘Our goal is to make passing on beloved IKEA pieces as seamless as possible. We’re creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our IKEA Family members to trade directly with one another. We want the process for buying and selling pre-owned IKEA products are simple, accessible and rewarding.’

So, if you have a BILLY Bookcase or KALLAX unit that no longer serves a purpose in your home, watch this space, as someone else can breathe a new lease of life into it.
