As the temperature drops and evenings become shorter, it is time to turn your home into a snug, welcoming haven where you can escape the winter chills.
Red is the must-have colour for this season and should be at the heart of your decorative scheme. Rich, warm and welcoming, it provides the perfect counterpoint to the frosty winter nights and adds an inviting note to any space, even on the coldest of days. So dress up your living areas in bright hues - such as scarlet or crimson - for a bold, modern feel, or opt for darker shades like carmine for sophisticated country-house style elegance.
To create an interesting visual contrast, pair red with deep green, a timeless shade that is very easy to bring into your décor, thanks to a combination of soft furnishings and foliage arrangements. To up the luxury feel, also introduce a few hints of gold: a sprinkling of golden candles or gold-effect candle-holders will give you just the right amount of sparkle.
Echo your colour scheme subtly with classic tartan patterns, which are right on trend this winter. Sainsbury's has fabulous new dinnerware ranges in both tartan and solid red, which are great to mix and match. Both work beautifully against the backdrop of a classic cream and red striped table runner, vintage-style glasses and fine silverware.
To make your living and entertaining space even more inviting, create a warm, golden glow with pretty candle displays - hanging ones are especially good because they provide a beautiful focal point.Combine these with large jar candles and don't forget to light some logs in the fireplace for a cocooning feel.
Complete the look with nature-inspired decorations, such as pinecones, berries and even lichen-covered twigs, a few of Sainsbury's pretty stag and robin ornaments, and a stunning red rose arrangement for a touch of grandeur.
The new Traditional Red homewares collection is available at selected Sainsbury's stores from 25th October.
