A tree makes a stunning focal point in any outside space, but choose too-large a tree for a small garden, and there’s the danger that it will completely overwhelm the space. But opt for a smaller, multi-stem tree, and it can make as striking a focal point as any large tree but while still feeling in proportion with the space. And there’s the bonus of low-maintenance multi-stem trees being much easier to look after too, so what’s not to love?

‘If your home has a small garden, then multi-stem trees are one of the best trees for small spaces, offering a really simple yet effective way to create a focal point without needing to compromise on any valuable outdoor space,’ says David Denyer, flower and garden expert at Eflorist.

‘If planning a small garden, it's worth factoring in that many varieties of multi-stem tree require little maintenance in modest gardens once established, which makes them perfect for the majority of us who probably don’t have a huge amount of time to spend tending to their garden.'

Multi-stem trees are becoming increasingly popular. A brilliant option for compact gardens or small patio ideas, the tree’s energy is divided across several smaller stems (rather than one large trunk), which naturally restricts the overall height and spread of the tree and keeps it more compact.

And by fanning out from the ground (rather than up high), multi-stem trees create interesting structural forms that give interest at eye-level without requiring a large footprint, which is why they work so well in smaller gardens.

‘The easy-to-grow Fuji cherry tree is a delicate plant with its long twigs coming to life in late winter and early spring with stunning flowers,’ says Chris Bonnet, founder of Gardening Express. ‘The leaves change shade each season for year-round interest, and it will thrive in full sun, requiring just a light prune in mid-summer, purely to remove dead, diseased or crossing branches.’

When choosing where to place a multi-stem tree, positioning them in a prominent spot, like the centre of a lawn or a courtyard garden, can work well, where their features can be enjoyed up close, such as a tree with fragrant blossoms or an attractive peeling bark. In larger spaces, consider positioning one where you can take advantage of the dappled shade, such as around a garden seating area.

3. Amelanchier

Another major benefit of choosing a multi-stem tree for a small garden is that they create open, airy canopies that help to softly filter sunlight, rather than dense foliage that casts heavy shadows, which keeps smaller gardens feeling light and bright rather than dark and shady.

‘Amelanchiers are a great choice for a compact garden, because they are small and require minimal pruning,’ suggests David. ‘During spring you’ll be treated to delicate white springtime blossoms, then summer brings green foliage and autumn a vibrant orange and then red leaves throughout autumn.’

‘This versatile tree with its silvery white bark and architectural shape will create a fabulous focal point in the garden,’ says Chris. ‘It thrives in a sunny south-facing spot with well-drained soil, and it will need pruning between late summer and mid-winter.

‘When it comes to pruning a Himalayan birch tree, remove only dead, diseased or crossing branches,' adds Chris. 'And if there’s a build-up of green algae on the trunk, gently sponge this off with warm water.’

‘Acer palmatum (also known as Japanese maple) is a good, low-maintenance choice for any small garden or one of the best trees to grow in pots,’ suggests Chris. ‘This architectural plant looks beautiful all year round with colour-changing displays throughout the seasons.’

‘Acers require minimum care - some gentle pruning to keep the tree’s shape, with heavy pruning best done during January and February when the plant is dormant,’ adds Chris.

‘Olive trees offer a contemporary and Mediterranean vibe to any sized garden or outdoor space,’ suggests David. ‘And they will thrive when added to any large container if planting space is limited.

‘Olive trees are also incredibly resilient in hot weather and extremely drought-tolerant, making them perfect for placing in any sunny or sheltered areas.’

‘With evergreen foliage and bright blue flowers from spring until early summer, Californian Lilac is a welcome addition to any garden, big or small,’ says Chris.

‘An easy-to-maintain plant, Californian lilac will only need trimming lightly once the blue flowers have faded, which will help maintain the bushy shape,’ adds Chris.
