Unconventional architectural gem goes on sale for £1.2 million

It’s not quite the Crystal Dome, but this one-of-a-kind geodesic house could be just as much fun to live in…

Is it a Hobbit house? A Teletubby bolt-hole? An example of CGI for an animated family film? No! It’s a piece of award-winning residential 1980s architecture, nestled in the village of Tatsfield near the North Downs. And it’s available to buy for the first time since its current owners had it built.

Listed at £1.2 million, the dome-shaped, four-bedroom home (with its own swimming pool in the half-acre plot) was designed by David Richmond Associates in 1986.
Something of a celebrity when it was first built, The Dome House made appearances in the national press and on TV, long before property was a popular fixture on our screens. And we can see why…

Downstairs, the living areas flow into one another, from hallway to drawing room, through the dining room into the light-filled kitchen. And there’s another informal family living room, that acts as a hideaway from the more formal areas.

Up the open-tread staircase – so 1980s, but so space-enhancing – there’s a minstrels gallery where the unique geometry of the wooden ceiling can really be felt. All that before you even get to the three spacious bedrooms
(two with en-suites), sizeable dressing room and a streamlined family bathroom.

Throw the attention towards those vaulted angled ceilings in the living areas, the spattering of triangular windows showcasing slices of the big garden and the Kent surroundings, the interesting angles at every turn – life in this house could never be described as ‘standard’, could it?
