  • Make the most of your last day off work

If lazing in bed with a boxset is your initial plan for today, scrap it – there’s too much going on in the capital and at home to miss out on.

Here’s how to make the most of the last 24 hours of the Bank Holiday weekend.

    Beach East

Hang onto the last taste of summer with over 2,200 square metres of sand at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. No doubt the site for endless sandcastle competitions, there’s also a gigantic paddling pool and funfair rides to entertain the kids, as well as two beach bars for the adults. Life’s a beach. Entry is free. For more information visit queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk

Plan next spring’s colours (or create a cooks’ herb garden)

Get the best choice, save money (compared to buying potted-up bulbs later on) and start planting those spring flowering bulbs. Forced hyacinths for Christmas flowering will also need to be planted now.

No matter what size your outdoor space is, you can create a herb garden that you’ll actually use. Here’s how. After all, there is nothing more satisfying than adding a sprinkling of homegrown herbs to a Sunday roast.

Taste, smell and feel artwork at the Tate

An email you can sniff? A film you can feel? A new exhibition, Tate Sensorium, at Tate Britain explores whether taste, touch, smell and sound changes the way people experience art. Visitors will be provided with a wristband that records their biometrical data as they react to the exhibition, which will then be analysed by the University of Sussex. Tate Sensorium will run at the Tate Britain until 20 September.

    Get creative

An easy update (unless you’re a fan of clutter) that you don’t have to leave the house for. Creating an impressive shelving display requires an element of organisation as you don’t want your display to look too contrived. Think about the colour and shape of your objects and then get creative. Follow our step-by-step guided here.

    Get back to nature

Unless an Indian summer is on the cards, this could be your last opportunity of the year to take a dip in our lakes, rivers and waterways (or, if you’re not into wild swimming, just head to the beach). Go on, take the plunge.
