Arabella St John Parker, Houses & Gardens Editor at Homes and Gardens magazine takes a tour around a beautiful country house in Hampshire with interior designer Stephanie Dunning who designed the decor.
Stephanie is delighted with the hallway as it is a beautiful, big space. When she designs interior schemes she likes to place a table in the hallway. Whether it is a console table or a central table, both can add an impact. However, as she explains, it can be difficult to decide where to put a central table without it taking up too much space.
In this entrance hall, Stephanie decided to put a large round table in the middle, according to where the natural light is. She explains how, coming through the front door, you tend to go straight to the kitchen or the sitting room, but in this space Stephanie wanted to create a detour. Instead of putting the table right in front of the door, it has been positioned just to the side, in line with the fireplace, to allow light through and to make good use of the space.
The striking marble fireplace replaces a wood burner, which used to be in the fire, and a fantastic arrangement of flowers adjacent to a large beautiful mirror throw light in. Stephanie also likes to have a mirror in a hallway, the bigger the better.
A Scandinavian daybed matches neatly with the table and adds a flash of colour, which go nicely with the painting and make it pop.
