Welcome to the £20 Challenge with Laurie and Emily from Style at Home magazine. Today they are at the Epsom Racecourse Antiques & Collectables Fair in Surrey. The Fair runs from February to December each month with a whole host of stalls inside and out. Laurie and Emily have been given £20 to find a treasure to revamp into something amazing.
After a busy days shopping and haggling, the girls head to stalls overlooking the racecourse to show off their bargain – an antique school desk. They have a few ideas up their sleeve about how to transform it. Emily wants to paint the desk white and dip dye the legs, while Laurie wants to give it a vintage feel with lace.
Back at Style at Home HQ Laurie and Emily explain how they are going to upcycle the school desk. “We’ve decided to go for a white painted finish with metallic details”, explains Laurie.
To start, they sand down the desk, after brushing it down, they paint the whole desk with a white matt emulsion.
One day and two coats later they are ready to add the metallic effect. Firstly they mask off a section which is 9inches up from the bottom of the table legs, then they use a metallic bronze paint to coat the legs, edges and grooves of the desk.
