This eighteenth-century Dutch homestead has a modern architect-built extension, made from Cor-Ten steel, deliberately designed to rust to a point to complement the cedar siding of the original house.

New York farmhouse

Kitchen
In the kitchen, stainless steel and walnut units give a striking contemporary look. Roundhouse can design similar. The floors are tiled with Portugese limestone, which you can buy from Stone Age.

Fireplace
The walls in the house are simply plastered. To make the room feel larger, the partition wall between living and dining rooms has a connecting fireplace. The floating ledge is made of Portugese limestone.

Living room
Around the corner, in the living room, a B&B Italia cashmere sofa creates the perfect place to watch films. The lambswool rug is by ABC Carpet.

Bedroom
The master bedroom is on the ground floor, and is flooded with light from the large windows. The walnut slat bed was designed by Messana O'Rorke, and the flooring is Portugese limestone continued from the kitchen.

Bathroom
In the bathroom, Velux skylights let the light flow in while maintaining privacy. The walls are panelled with painted bead boards, made from Douglas fir, to a recessed flush dado rail with polished diamond plaster above. Victoria Plumb sells similar baths.
