Ideal Home meet Matthew Williamson, to talk about his Autumn/Winter collection for Debenhams.
What do you like about this particular collection?
What’s lovely is it feels like a real natural evolution from one season to the next. My homeware at Debenhams has become known and associated with travel and tropical elements, so that thread really continues through with this next collection.
What would you say are the more exciting pieces in the collection?
I would say top of my list would be the pineapple lampshade. It has a beautiful gold tarnished base with an aubergine shade. I’ll definitely be ordering two of those for my bedside tables! And then I think lots of the cushions and bed throws are really easy pieces to bring into your room and freshen up the space.
Would you be able to give tips based on the way you create your collections?
I guess when it comes to styling I don’t really like to pre-prescribe tips or rules, I think a lot of what I do is instinct and also that desirability that you get when you ask yourself ‘do you love this piece?’. My styling tip would be to go with what speaks to you.
Can you talk us through the chosen pieces in this room?
I’ve personally dressed this bed myself to showcase what I would consider to be the highlights of the bedding offer, it’s quite a broad collection of bed linens, and then what we’ve done is taken those pops of turquoise and lemon and introduced those through into other elements, such as these beautiful graphic patchwork cushions, pieces which are special for what they will retail at. They’re quite strong pieces, I’ll definitely order some; they’ll go on my sofa at home and work a treat! I also love this cheeky little decorative cushion, it doesn’t have much function but they’re an easy pick up piece that you can spread throughout your home.
Is there anything else you’d like to showcase from your collection?
I nearly forgot to mention a couple of my favourite things; one is this cute little candelabra palm tree centerpiece that you could stick three of them down the centre of a dinner table for a really beautiful effect. And I must not forget my finale suggestion for brightening your day, he’s about to get some flowers in him to cheer him up a bit, so another one of my favourites.
