The UK’s leading design show returns this month and what better way to celebrate the start of LDF than taking in one of these eye-catching installations.
The Curiosity Cloud
This interactive installation by Austrian design duo mischer’traxler and boutique Champagne house Perrier-Jouet, is perhaps the most intriguing installation at this year’s London Design Festival. It promises 250 hand-blown globes that emit light and contain a handmade insect, which react as people approach, emitting sound as they collide with the glass.
The Tower of Babel
Created by artist Barnaby Barford, the six-meter high Tower of Babel comprising of 3,000 bone-china facades, depicting different London shops, may prove the piece de resistance.
A Bullet From A Shooting Star
No, a giant hasn’t thrown an electricity pylon javelin-style into the ground. This massive steel installation, commissioned by the LDF in collaboration with Greenwich Peninsula, by British sculptor Alex Chinneck will be visible from North Greenwich station, the Thames Clipper, the Emirates Airline cable car, Canary Wharf and planes flying to and from City Airport. The 35-metre tall inverted pylon will also be illuminated at night.
Heartbeat
Ever wondered what 100,000 white balloons would look like? Well, head to Covent Garden as that’s exactly what French artist Charles Petillon has done. The balloons are illuminated with a gently pulsing white lights, and will fill the South Hall of the Market Building.
The Cloakroom
A two-part illustration, where visitors can collect one of the designer’s 150 coats to wear around the museum. A map is sewn into every coat to guide you through the second part of the installation, a series of sculptural garments. Each one is made from non-traditional clothing materials, such as wood, fiberglass, and metal, bridging the worlds of furniture and fashion.
Mise-end-abyme
Designers Laetitia de Allegri and Matteo Fogale have collaborated with Johnson Tiles to create a play on colour and perspective on the bridge over the Medieval and Renaissance galleries at the V&A.
Robin Day: Works in Wood
Turner Prize nominees Assemble celebrate the centenary of the birth of Robin Day, one of Brtain’s most significant furniture designers, with an exhibition focusing on his passion for wood.
